• A Comprehensive Duel between Top Tablets: Google Nexus 7 vs. Apple’s new iPad

Posted on July 27th, 2012 David Brooks No comments

Ever since the official release of Apple’s iPad, it has been the best seller in the tablet market. For a long time, it remains to be at the top of tablet market, though a lot of other wonderful tablet devices have been continuously challenging its leading role, like Motorola XOOM, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Asus Transformer Prime, and various other Android tablets. The iPad continues to stand head above water over its rivals, especially since the release of the new iPad, which further more makes Apple iPad an undefeatable myth. Various tablet manufacturers are trying to produce a tablet that could match iPad. Amazon has had success with its budget Kindle Fire, but has limited the device to the US audience thus far. In an attempt to gain traction in the tablet market, Google has followed suit by releasing the 7 inches Google Nexus 7, one of the most powerful tablet rivals to challenge Apple iPad so far. Today, I would like to put Google Nexus 7 tablet head-to-head with Apple iPad in key features to make a comprehensive comparison. You can get the information from this duel and decide which one suits you most. The comparison will mainly focus on the following areas: design, display, processor, OS, camera, media, connectivity, storage, battery, price, etc.

Google Nexus 7 Vs Apple New iPadDesign and display: The 7” Google’s Nexus 7 looks glossier than other tablets in the market. It’s also very convenient for you to keep Nexus 7 into your cargo pocket but can’t with the 9.7-inch iPad. As for display, no tablet could be compared with the Retina Display of New iPad, not even Nexus 7. Google offers IPS display of 1280×800 on its 7-inch Nexus tablet where as Apple offers 2048×1536 pixels IPS panel on its tablet, which means that you can watch 720P DVD movies on Nexus 7, but on the other hand you can watch full Blu-ray movie on the new iPad.

Processor: The new iPad runs on quad-core 1GHz Apple A5X processor and got 12-core GPU, while the Nexus 7 chomps down with a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 CPU, which runs significantly faster and is expected to deliver a better and smoother performance.

Operating system (OS): Google’s Nexus 7 runs on the latest Android operating system, the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS, which is claimed to offer Project Butter user interface. While the new iPad now runs on iOS 5 and in few months it will be updated to iOS 6.

Camera: The iPad’s rear 5MP iSight camera might not deliver the best shots, but it’s simply nice to know that the option to snap something is there – plus, it deepens its value over its rival. The Nexus 7 packs only a front-facing camera that’s accessible by specific apps – with no dedicated camera app to snap photos or videos.

Multimedia: There’s little difference between these two tablets in playing music, but the Nexus 7 provides cool 3D carousel sound. The audio quality is also excellent on both tablets. As to the video playback, due to the Retina Display, there’s no doubt that the new iPad would become the winner.

Connectivity: Right now, the Google Nexus 7 is available in Wi-Fi form only, while the iPad is available in Wi-Fi and a variety of 3G/4G LTE options. As for other connectivity options, they both pack Bluetooth and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, the Nexus 7 has a GPS while the iPad has it in the 4G version only.

Storage: Google’s Nexus 7 comes with an internal storage of 8GB and 16GB in two versions where as New iPad’s on-board storage are 16GB, 32GB and 64GB on respective versions. The new iPad obviously provides more choices.

Battery: Battery is always a concern of smartphones, tablets and other electronic devices. Both devices provide users a day long use. But due to the different display size and resolution, the new iPad would make some concession in battery use.

Price: Google has price tagged Nexus 7 at $199 (8GB) or $249 (16GB) with $25 of Play store credit and Apple seeks $499 to $699 for the Wi-Fi model and $629 to $829 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular models.

  • Apple’s new iPad vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 – Which one will be your choice

Posted on March 21st, 2012 David Brooks No comments

In a dilemma on deciding which tablet you should get between Apple’s new iPad (3rd generation) and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1? Need some suggestions to help you make your decision? Well, it would be the right place for you to take reference here.

With the release and shipment availability of Apple’s new iPad, the Apple iPad 2 has made its way for its successor. So the new iPad has replaced the iPad 2 to be one of the best choices for you to choose when you need to get a tablet. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE comes to mind as a dubious competitor since it’s regarded as the best of the best from Samsung’s camp. On the surface, both are very similar with their options, which is hardly a surprise, but as we’ve come to expect, there can only be one that will ultimately prove itself to be the sole standout hit. And today what we are going to do is to make a simple and clear comparison between Apple’s new iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. But before diving in, it’s worth noting that the Apple iPad 4G LTE’s price starts at $629.99 for both AT&T and Verizon variants, whereas the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE is a bit more at $699.99 through Verizon only. The prices of these two tablets also play a role in deciding which one you will get. Besides the price, the comparison between these two fabulous tablets includes: processor, display, memory, internet connectivity, camera, battery, etc.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 vs. Apple iPad 3Processor: The new iPad moves swimmingly in all of its functions thanks to its Apple A5x SoC processor, which breaks down to a 1.5GHz dual-core processor combined with a quad-core graphics processing unit. Despite boasting a still respectable 1GHz dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 exhibits the choppiness that we tend to see prevalent amongst Honeycomb tablets in general.

Screen display: Without doubt, the winner of screen display should be the new iPad, which features a mind-bending resolution of 2048 x 1536 Retina display, which makes it even be able to play full HD Blu-ray movies on new iPad, while Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 only features a 1280 x 800 resolution screen display.

Memory: The new iPad provides three different versions upon different storage, respectively 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB, with no way of expanding it. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 offered 16GB and 32GB versions, but it can be expanded via its available microSD card slot.

Camera: The iPad’s improved 5-megapixel iSight camera produces better overall results and faster snapper than that of Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Although they both excel with macro and outdoor scenery shots, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 doesn’t handle dynamic range as well as the iPad.

Internet and connectivity: Both these two top-notch tablets offer 4G LTE connectivity, which enables them to load complex web site in no time at all. But they produce different browsing experience due to the browsing speeds. The new iPad responses faster than that of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with things like kinetic scrolling and pinch zooming. They both feature connectivity items such as aGPS, 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, and mobile hotspot functionality, but the new iPad supports Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity while the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 only works with Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR.

Battery: Battery is also an important element in deciding a tablet performance. Both tablets provide at least one single day of power consuming at average, with the new iPad featuring 11,560 mAh battery while Galaxy Tab 10.1 including a 6,800 mAh one inside.

With the comparison, you may get in your mind which tablet you want. But remember, the better one may not well suit you, as you need to make clear what kind of tablet you need, and then you can make your own choice. Hope this post would help you.

  • Apple iPad with Retina and LTE debuted – What we didn’t get from the new Apple iPad

Posted on March 8th, 2012 David Brooks No comments

On the March 7th Apple event, Apple officially released its next generation of iPad, which resets the goal line again even as various competitors have made great challenges to it on the just past MWC 2012 feast to catch up iPad in the burgeoning market for tablets. The new iPad, not named as iPad HD, iPad 2S or iPad 3 as previously rumored, comes with full HD Retina Display which offers a resolution of 2048×1536 (3.1 million pixels) and quad-core A5X GPU processor which is four times as fast as the nearest competition, which together bring excellent graphic experience and effect for you to watch even HD Blu-ray movies on iPad. Meanwhile, this new iPad is also capable of operating on 4G network for both AT&T and Verizon carriers. To make their iPads more competitive, Apple priced the new iPad from $499, the same as iPad 2, and cut the price of iPad 2 by $100. If you want to know more detailed specs of the Apple new iPad, please check the new iPad (3rd generation) specs on Apple official site.

Apple new iPadAfter talking about the specs of the new iPad, let’s say something that the new iPad didn’t bring to us, or features the new iPad doesn’t include but may disappoint us a little.

A6 processor: Prior to launch, there were a lot of rumors and speculations towards what kind of chip would power the next iPad, A5 processor or brand-new A6 processor. After the iPhone 4S got a modified version of the A5 processor found in the iPad 2, many presumed the new iPad would get the A6 processor. Instead Apple released the new iPad with the A5X processor, though it’s quad-core chip and Apple claimed that the A5X processor is as fast as four times as the performance of NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor.

Siri: One of the biggest updates of iPhone 4S is the new Siri, the voice-controlled iPhone virtual assistant feature. Since this software emerged on iPhone 4S, all people would expect Apple to add Siri to the next iPad. But Apple just enabled the new iPad to allow users to dictate e-mails, without any mention of Siri.

iOS 6: Ars Technica reported that it was seeing devices running iOS 6 in logs, sparking hope that Apple might release–or at least tease–iOS 6. Alas, we’re only getting iOS 5.1 now. Expect more iOS news to emerge in June at Apple’s World Wide Developers conference.

A 128GB version: Since the full HD graphic effects with the Retina display, the new iPad is supposed to be one of the best choices to play HD movies and HD games. Thus, more memory storage is required for convenient HD movie playback and HD games playing. A 128GB version of iPad is thus highly expected. But Apple just provides a topping choice at 64GB with no memory expansion slot.

These four features have made them big disappointments to the new iPad. Others include: the absence of a rumored iPad mini version, the same design as that of iPad 2, no lighter weight, etc. But even though these things make the new iPad somewhat disappointed, we have to admit that currently there are few tablets that could compete with the new iPad. Only the Retina display would make other competitors lag far behind.

  • See what people think about Apple and the March 7th iPad 3 release event

Posted on February 15th, 2012 David Brooks No comments

The release date of Apple iPad 3 has now been confirmed to be the first week of March, more exactly iPad 3 to be released on March 7th. The new iPad 3 is said to feature quite high-end configurations, including: 9.7 inch full HD Retina screen display with 2048*1536 screen resolution for producing excellent video experience to play HD Blu-ray movies on iPad 3, 4G LTE network connection support, rumored A6 processor, larger memory storage than iPad 2, full HD games, etc. All these specs have been great concern from people worldwide, especially die-hard Apple fans. But for some people, Apple and Apple iPad might seem to be negative in their minds. They would think Apple and iPad stand evil. The ZDNet writer James Kendrick wrote a tongue-in-cheek post on ZDNet blog, namely “Don’t be evil, Apple, just sit on the iPad 3”, which has attracted great attention and triggered a hot discussion online towards Apple and Apple iPad. I have quoted the full post bellow to make it convenient for you to read the whole post. What do you think of Apple and the iPad 3? Let us know your opinion in the comment part.

Summary: A tongue-in-cheek look at what the iPad 3 will do to Apple’s evil reputation.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock you know that Apple is getting the next generation iPad ready to release to the masses. There are noJoke no iPad 3shortage of rumors what we might expect the iPad 3 to contain, I’ve added my own to the mix. One thing we know for certain about the next iPad, the launch will trigger a sales boom for Apple as these things usually do. Since Apple certainly doesn’t want to be considered evil, perhaps it would be only fair to hold off on the next iPad, at least for a while.

Let’s face it, the current iPad is selling like hotcakes, so a refreshed model is not required to continue Apple’s dominance in the tablet space. Triggering a sales spike over already dominant sales numbers by releasing the iPad 3 would only be rubbing it into the face of competing tablet makers. Given your desire to be a good neighbor I’m sure you don’t want to make all those other companies feel bad. People would end up getting fired, and you don’t want that on your heads.

It’s not like you need more profits, Apple, you’ve already got more money than most countries. Profits indicate greed, and you don’t want to be known as the evil, greedy company. It’s not like you don’t have enough money. Heck, you’ve got enough to give free textbooks for every student in the U. S. if you wanted. You’ve recently convinced us how much you want to help the nation’s kids so giving them textbooks instead of charging for them as indicated would be a very non-evil thing to do. You’d still have more money than God left over.

You can make the argument that a new iPad would really take it to the Android folks, and we know how much you hate them. That may be, but it would also derail the big Windows 8 effort at Microsoft. I know you wouldn’t want to do that, given the history of Microsoft stepping in at Apple’s darkest hour years ago and putting money on the line to keep you in business. That has to make Microsoft dear to you, and tanking the Windows 8 tablet effort before it even gets started would fly in the face of your close relationship.

So just sit on the new iPad, Apple, and keep the status quo. You’ll continue to make more money than all the other companies combined, and have that new iPad in your pocket for whenever you need it. The competition still won’t be able to give you a run for the money, and you’ll have fun watching them try. Don’t be evil, Apple.

Well, what’s your opinion towards Apple and Apple iPad? And how do you think of this post? Many people have added their comments to this post to show their attitude about the Apple iPad 3 event online. Remember to write your thought in the comment part.

  • 8 Reasons Why Windows 8 Tablets Would Beat Apple iPad 3

Posted on February 13th, 2012 David Brooks No comments

Windows 8 is the next generation of Microsoft’s operating system for personal computers, laptops, and tablets. It upgrades with major changes, such as an integrated software store–similar in concept to Apple’s Mac App Store–and support for ARM chips. Metro is the name of the new touch-centric user interface in Windows 8. Without a doubt, the purpose of Microsoft’s Windows 8 operation system is to compete with Apple iPad. Just several days ago, I wrote a post namely Mac OS X Lion vs. Windows 8 Developer Preview speed comparison, which made a comparison between Mac OS X Lion and Windows 8 Developer Preview in speed testing. The result shows that the Windows 8 Developer Preview takes the lead a little. Today, I would like to share something with you to see whether Windows 8 tablet could beat the Apple iPad 3, totally 8 reasons for your reference:

Windows 8 Tablet vs. iPad 21. Business users
Currently, many iPad users handle business with iPad. But Apple has no clear plan to enter large enterprises market with their iPad for business, which Microsoft on the contrast is quite familiar with. If Microsoft could make full use of this, the market share of Windows 8 tablet would be increased enormously.

    2. New Office
The Microsoft Office is still the killer app in Windows operation system, especially in business market. A fatal reason for the failure of Microsoft’s own brand tablets is that the Office compatibility was damaged in the versions before the Windows 8. Now, Microsoft would provide Office support for tablets with Intel and ARM processors, though it is still not clear whether Microsoft would bring out complete Metro Office.

    3. Mixed type of tablets
The Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime and Leveno IdeaPad Yoga are all multifunctional, not only as a tablet, but also a notebook device, which Apple iPad could not do.

    4. Metro user interface
Have to admit that the Microsoft Metro user interface is really beautiful and attractive, which may snatch users from iPad cause they would prefer Metro user interface to iOS interface.

    5. SkyDrive
Through a Windows ID, users could visit SkyDrive cloud content via any devices, including PC, Xbox, tablets, etc. while Windows 8 includes SkyDrive support.

    6. Run two apps simultaneously
For Windows 8 tablet users, it is a quite practical function to run two apps simultaneously on one screen.

    7. Nokia tablets
The Finland Nokia has been famous for its stable hardware around the world. It was reported that some time in this summer, Nokia would bring out Windows 8 tablet, which would no doubt arouse users’ interest.

    8. Wider options
Apple iPad only has one option, while Windows 8 tablets are provided and supported by various big businesses, which results in wider options for optimization.

By comparing these two tablets, now you may have your decision in your mind. But these are just for your reference. And due to the specs of the upcoming iPad 3’s are still not clear, there are always changes. So, stay clear if you want to get one Windows 8 tablet or an iPad 3.
